Planetary Axle Description:
AxleTech’s covered spider design planetary axles feature a final gearing reduction in the wheel hubs by planetary design spur gears. This design allows the carrier hypoid gearing and axle shafts to carry only nominal torsional loads while providing high numerical gear reduction at the wheels. Power is transmitted to the sun gear, through the revolving planetary gears, and into the planetary spider, which drives the wheel hub. Planetary wheel ends have three different designs: planetary pinion shafts with tapered roller bearings, needle roller bearings, or nylon coating.
Key Sections in the Manual:
- Safety/Notes: Includes warnings, cautions, notes, and a symbol (T) indicating fasteners must be tightened to a specific torque value. It also has warnings regarding asbestos and non-asbestos fibers when servicing brakes.
- Disassembly: Procedures for removing and disassembling planetary wheel ends, ring gear and axle shaft, hub oil seal and bearings, and the brake drum/disc brake rotor.
- Assembly: Procedures for installing the axle shaft, assembling the ring gear hub, wheel hub and bearings, and planetary spider assembly.
- Lubrication: Provides a lubrication schedule for off-highway use and oil specifications.
- Specifications: Lists planetary axle wheel end torque specifications for various fasteners.
